Israel's West Bank barrier 'illegal'
A United Nations human rights investigator has denounced a
controversial barrier Israel is building in the West Bank as illegal.
John Dugard, a South African law professor, said the wall was
tantamount to an "unlawful act of annexation" which should be
condemned by the international community.
Israel, which says it is building the wall to stop suicide bombers
crossing from Palestinian areas, dismissed the findings as "one-sided,
highly politicised and biased".
The report by the special investigator comes a day before the Israeli
Cabinet is due to decide on the route of the next stage of
construction.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has said the fence will be built
around two Jewish settlements - Ariel and Kedumim - reaching deep into
the West Bank.
The Palestinians have described the fence as a "Berlin Wall", which
traps some Palestinian towns and villages and has cut off farmers from
their land.
America has also raised objections and are considering withholding
loan guarantees to Israel in line with the money the Israelis spend on
the barrier.
'Facts on the ground'
In his report for the UN Commission on Human Rights, Mr Dugard warned
that the wall would incorporate "substantial areas" of the West Bank
into Israel.
"The evidence strongly suggests that Israel is determined to create
facts on the ground amounting to de facto annexation," the report
said.
He said about 210,000 Palestinians living in the area between the wall
and Israel, would be cut off from social services, schools and places
of work.
"This is likely to lead to a new generation of refugees or internally
displaced people," he said.
Mr Dugard said Israel's security concerns "cannot be denied", but said
"some limit must be placed on the violation of human rights in the
name of counter-terrorism".
Violence 'ignored'
Israel's ambassador to the UN, Yaakov Levy, rejected the report as
politically motivated.
"The report totally disregards the context of continuous violence
directed against Israeli civilians," he said.
Hundreds of Israelis have been killed by Palestinian suicide bombers
who have walked from Palestinian areas into Israeli towns over the
past nine years.
Israel has insisted the fence, which will eventually stretch about 225
kilometres (140 miles) is a temporary measure and says it has
endeavoured to minimise disruption to Palestinians living in the area.
Zalman Shoval, an advisor to Ariel Sharon, said the next stage of the
fence will incorporate Ariel and other settlements but that gaps will
be left in the fence.

That's what they get for waging war.

I think the Palestinians are fighting for something they feel was taken from
them. They're not doing a great job of winning world support since they're
idea of a 'smart bomb' is a 17 year old with a belt full of explosives who
detonates himself within a crowd of innocents.
If the Palestinians had the full financial and military backing of a
first-world country so that they could direct their attacks more at military
and political targets, I'm sure they gladly would.
I'm not saying either the Palestinians or the Israeli's are right or wrong,
I'm just saying this is hardly a fair fight. You can't ***** on the
Palestinians for fighting 'dirty' ( if such a thing could exist ) since they
have no other means to fight. And remember, they would not be fighting like
this if they had the financial and military support that Israel enjoys.

Nah, that's no excuse. Remember that they can get what they want just by
stopping to fight.
They have absolutely no justification, since they can only lose by fighting. It
is pure hatred.
There is no excuse for that. They get only what they deserve. And yet barely. If
the Israeli would use their military might for attack instead of for minimal
defense, then, maybe you could say something. So far, Arafat is the worst
dictatorship in the world and you're wrong about winning the world support, 90%
of the country have always in the past adopted the outrageous Palestinian unjust
resolutions at the general assembly, granted, for political reasons, still the
world shows that anti-Semitism hasn't dwindle a lot since the end of WW2,
unfortunately.
So no, there is no excuse and it's not a question of military might, but if it
is, it is one to the extent that it shows that they are not willing to use the
military they have to squelch those that destroy their potential country nor to
collaborate with those that do minimally address these low life because they do
not, and that once they will have their country and have unified military,
they will probably turn out like in Lebanon. And will have to get their
legitimate butt kicked. They can only hate. This is Arafat's mess. And that of
every part of the world that support him.
