Lightning strike causes massive US blackout

Hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers will be spending tonight outdoors
as they make their way home on foot.
New York is without power, as is much of the north-east and south-east
of Canada, after a massive power blackout.
A lightning strike is believed to have caused the first power blackout
like this since 1965.
Darkness has fallen across much of the north-east of the United States
and south-east Canada with power still out as millions of people make
their way home on foot and in the dark.
A spokesman for the Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretian says a
lightning strike at the Niagara New York power station caused the
colossal blackout.
New York Governor George Pataki says the system failed to stop the
power blackout cascading right throughout the system.
"Hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers are walking home as Manhattan
relieved the blackout isn't the work of terrorists," he said.
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg says power will be restored within
hours and promises tomorrow will be a normal business day.
Earlier CNN's New York Radio Correspondent Gary Baumgarden said New
York traffic remained gridlocked as people tried to get out of the
city.
"People actually went down into the subway system to help people who
were stranded find their way through the darkened corridors there and
up into the day's light and there has been no report of any looting,
there has been no fires," he said.
"The big problem is some people are having some medical problems as a
result of walking down large numbers of flights of stairs or because
they may panic a little bit. It's hot, ninety degrees here."
The blackouts extend beyond New York to Cleveland, Ohio and Detroit,
Michigan and have been reported in Toronto and Ottowa in Canada.
Niagara Mohawk
A New York State official said the Niagara Mohawk power grid
overloaded causing a massive power outage, CNN reported.
Mr Bloomberg said smoke from a Consolidated Edison plant in the city
was due to the plant's automatic shutdown, not to a fire, as had been
reported.
He said: "I can tell you 100 per cent sure that there is no evidence
as of this moment whatsoever of any terrorism."
Stock exchange
The world's biggest stock exchange also lost all its power supplies in
the blackout.
"We've lost power at the moment," a spokesman for the New York Stock
Exchange said.
The day's trading was not affected by the power outage, and it is
unclear if the clearing and processing of end-of-day trades has been
affected.
"The market was closed already, we don't know what the impact was on
any of the clearing or processing or anything like that," the
spokesman said.
He said officials are responding to the blackout.
On an average day, more than 1.3 billion shares, exceeding $US35
billion, trade on the exchange.
