Freak storm lashes suburbs

A massive storm that swept through Melbourne's east last night caused
millions of dollars of damage to shops, homes and vehicles and threw
traffic into chaos as it dropped more than 60 millimetres of rain in
less than two hours.
Earlier in the day the slow-moving storm drenched Deer Park in the
west. But the eastern suburbs of Hawthorn, Kew, Camberwell and North
Balwyn took the brunt of flash floods as pouring rain and hail struck
between 5.30pm and 7pm. Shops and houses around Hawthorn's Glenferrie
Road, Riversdale Road, Tooronga Road were worst affected.
Toufic El-Ahmor, the owner of Riversdale Fruit, described it as the
heaviest downpour since the freak one-in-a-hundred year storm that hit
Melbourne's north and east last month when 100 millimetres fell in two
hours.
"Nearly every shop around here has been damaged. It was very, very
bad," he said.
At the height of the storm water gushed into houses in Cole Street.
David Pitt watched in horror as a half-metre-deep torrent swept
through the front of his home.
"There was just a deluge and then the hail came and the water started
coming through the front door at a rate of knots," he said.
