Storms kill at least 13 in Alabama

CBC News
Storms driven by high winds ravaged Alabama Thursday, killing at least
13 people and injuring dozens more.
Rescue workers search for victims inside Enterprise High School in
Enterprise, Ala., after an apparent tornado ripped through the city
Thursday afternoon.
(Dothan Eagle, Danny Tindell/Associated Press) One of the worst hit
locations was a high school in the southern town of Enterprise, where
at least eight people died when a roof collapsed.
Yasamie Richardson, a state emergency official, said it is unclear
whether the people who died at the school were students, teachers or
both.
Students told a local NBC station that the scene was terrifying.
Martha Rodriquez, a 15-year-old sophomore, told NBC she arrived at the
school moments after the storm hit and found a hall had collapsed and
a stadium had been destroyed.
"There were cars tipped over in the parking lot and trees were ripped
out," she said. "There were trees and wood everywhere. It was just
horrible."
An overturned car and scattered debris are seen outside Enterprise
High School.
(Dothan Eagle, Danny Tindell/Associated Press) At least 40 people were
sent to the hospital in Enterprise, a town of about 20,000. Homes in
the community were also damaged.
In Miller's Ferry, a community in southwest Alabama, tornado-like
storms tore through a trailer park, killing at least five people and
damaging mobile homes.
Storms also killed a girl, 7, in Missouri.
The same system has moved into Southern Ontario, dumping snow on
Toronto and surrounding areas. Communities from Windsor to Quebec are
being affected.

It's getting to be that time of year here again, Wally. Weather fronts and
such are pretty volatile in the spring going into early summer. Gotta watch
the newz and constantly look for a hole to hide in. :-)

Don't be making fun about polar bears. That whole situation breaks my
heart. Makes me want to drive up into Canada and go cuddle with one.
Cold has never bothered me unless it gets down well below zero. Spent a lot
of time out in it. The snow wouldn't bother me except for the fact that it
always falls in my driveway and on the roads.
That's not Dani back either. It's Chris. It's always been Chris. That

Doesn't it though ? Those poor bears swim and swim, but they can't
quite make it to the next ice sheet.. then they go under.. damn
global warming.

True. It starts getting to me toward the end of winter after we've
seen several months of very cold weather and one or more colds/flus.
After my energy starts getting beaten down I tend to get more vocal
and critical of the whole cold weather thing.. then spring returns,
the birds sing, all is well once again in paradise. :)

Spent a

:-> Nice.
I still don't agree with you on that. It doesn't take much effort
to despise a guy like tonyz, and no guy would say the kinds of
things dani says. She is posting from the perspective of a
young female (mid-20's). If it is a guy, it's a very, very good
impersonation. I'm actually more inclined to believe steven douglas
is a computer generated ai personality.. no human can be quite so
stupid and myopic.

Kind of an omen of what might be happening on a much larger scale to people
living at sea level.

Cold has never bothered me unless it gets down well below zero.

Someone in Colorado is a bit closer to paradise than most.
It starts getting us all when winter is prolonged. The cool thing is that
the intensity of spring fever is commensurate with the intensity of cabin
fever. There'll be a lot goofy people running around in a few short weeks.
We haven't had a real winter in a long time. No sudden March warm ups. No
glee at watching the big snow piles melting away into green grass. I've
missed that the last several years. Love the change in seasons and the
drama it brings. Wouldn't live anywhere else.

I think everyone hated Tony. Even his right wing allies but, like Saddam,
it doesn't matter who you team up with as long as it serves your purposes.
She sounds like she's seasoned a bit. It's cool the way some young females
ripen into their 30's. Becomes another kind of beauty. That happens when
you accept your personal challenges and gain some wisdom.

If it is a guy, it's a very, very good
impersonation. I'm actually more inclined to believe steven douglas

I'm coming to agree with that. Stephen has to follow the template. Stay on
message. The challenge isn't holding yourself to a higher standard,
telling the truth, growing up because you're stretching to walk a finer
moral line. The important thing is latching on to the myth and seeing it
thru to it's fascist/corporate fruition regardless of how transparent the
twisting and bending of reality is. It's good exercise anyway. Helps one
move up a few degrees with your brethren.
When the lies become irrefutable the big guys retire to Texas or Wyoming.
The junior lawyers on usenet simply change their false identities and leave
the damage behind.

Jonathon, why do you presume to know (and then judge, based on your
presumptions) my motivations? Have I ever presumed to know your
motivations?

The important thing is latching on to the myth and seeing it
thru to it's fascist/corporate fruition regardless of how transparent the
twisting and bending of reality is.

Just because my opinion differs from yours, my opinion is not just
invalid, it is somehow corrupt? Your way of dealing with people who
disagree with you demonstrates an ongoing fundamental immaturity in
your intellect. I'm not alone in my opinions. The Democratic Party's
majority maker in the Senate wrote an article the other day. I'm sure
you're prepared to judge his motivations as well.
The Choice on Iraq
"I appeal to my colleagues in Congress to step back and think
carefully about what to do next."
BY JOSEPH LIEBERMAN
Monday, February 26, 2007 12:01 a.m. EST
[excerpt] Two months into the 110th Congress, Washington has never
been more bitterly divided over our mission in Iraq. The Senate and
House of Representatives are bracing for parliamentary trench warfare--
trapped in an escalating dynamic of division and confrontation that
will neither resolve the tough challenges we face in Iraq nor
strengthen our nation against its terrorist enemies around the world.
What is remarkable about this state of affairs in Washington is just
how removed it is from what is actually happening in Iraq. There, the
battle of Baghdad is now under way. A new commander, Gen. David
Petraeus, has taken command, having been confirmed by the Senate,
81-0, just a few weeks ago. And a new strategy is being put into
action, with thousands of additional American soldiers streaming into
the Iraqi capital.
Congress thus faces a choice in the weeks and months ahead. Will we
allow our actions to be driven by the changing conditions on the
ground in Iraq--or by the unchanging political and ideological
positions long ago staked out in Washington? What ultimately matters
more to us: the real fight over there, or the political fight over
here? [end excerpt]

wrong (I've always liked you so I'm telling you this nicely).
You're waaaay off base, though! Oh and what about the *half Italian*
... if I was Chris (lol) - he would never say he's Italian! .. :)

Think about it. They've got the same
politics, the same passion. Love for the IRA and hatred of America.

Whoa.. slow down there chief.. "Love for the IRA" ..oh please, please
show me where I have EVER shown "love" for the IRA! Go get that in
the archives please. And hatred for America? How many times have I
had to fight with people here (EVEN CHRIS), sticking up for America
and Americans? You can pick that up in the archives too while you're
at it.
Please.. criticism of the horrendous president and outrage over the
"war" is sticking up for America, in my eyes. How bad are we to the
rest of the world (which comes directly back and reflects on everyday,
average Americans like myself) ..AFTER Bush has been in office,
compared to before his arrival? Tell me how things (our reputation
etc..) have changed from BEFORE Bush has been in office, to the day,
today?
I have no "hatred" for America.. I'm absolutely petrified for America,
actually.

They
come and go around the same time. The only person that claims to have talked

Amy talked to me on the phone too - Susan had my phone number, we
never talked to eachother on the phone, but she had the number and
could've called at any time. Why would I give someone my phone number
if I intended to try and lie to them about my gender? There's no way
I could convincingly imitate a man's voice.
Do you want to call me? LOL!

It's a big game. Hell,
they both even hated Tony.

going on here lately it's hard to keep things straight.
Maybe we'll get a chance to talk someday.
Cheers back.

Cheers,

Ah *****! You got me! .. :)

Didn't mean to "get" you. Really good to see you back.

Thanks! It's good to see you too.
As far as the "getting" me post - there were so many wild stories
flying around here about me that I immediately went into defense mode
when I should've taken a deep breath, read your post again, realized
it was coming from ONE OF THE SWEETEST GUYS HERE!!!! and *thought*
before I reacted. I am sorry.. I know that for me, personally, when
someone that I consider a friend doubts me, I find that offensive. So
I felt bad after I realized that your post was "tongue 'n cheek" and I
freaked out over it! ..lol.

"sorry" 'bout that.. I'm a little on the defensive I guess; a little
more couscous considering the show eric has been putting on lately.
You and I have always gotten along, John.. sorry I doubted you!

Not a problem there, darlin, soooooooooooo much subterfuge and game playing
going on here lately it's hard to keep things straight.

Tell me about it.. I'm on the verge of giving every last person here
my phone number - or, better yet.. putting together an APN Regulars
get together so we can all meet in person and the whole gender dispute
can be laid to rest. Not sure where we'd all meet, though.. we've got
Americans here, Canadians here, Brits here, Australians here, Irish
here, we have Chris in Sweden and Grantland in South Africa (sorry
if I left anyone out).
How about Amsterdam? Or England? I loved both those places when
I visited. I've never been to Canada so maybe there? Yeah, Canada,
that's where eric lives! Hehe.. we'll even invite Shyte and Tony.
What a regular riot that would be.

Maybe we'll get a chance to talk someday.

Sure.. I don't give out my email address here anymore for obvious
reasons (and I have a new one now), but I still have yours ..so I'll
drop ya a line sometime, okay?
Cheers,
Dani

Storms kill at least 13 in Alabama

Last Updated: Thursday, March 1, 2007 | 6:51 PM ET

Tornadoes kill 19; school collapses
Thu Mar 1, 2007 8:40PM EST
By Peggy Gargis and Verna Gates
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (Reuters) - Tornadoes ripped across the Southern
and Midwestern United States on Thursday and killed at least 19
people, most of whom had been taking shelter in a high school that
collapsed in southern Alabama.
Seventeen people died in the southern Alabama town of Enterprise,
where the school building was torn open by the twister, state
Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Yasmie Richardson told the
Montgomery Advertiser newspaper.
Gov. Bob Riley, who declared a state of emergency and sent 100
National Guard troops to the town, said there was at least one more
death elsewhere in Alabama and rescue workers were still moving debris
to search for survivors as night fell.
Another death was reported in Missouri.
Television news footage showed helicopters landing on the football
field near wreckage of the school in Enterprise while ambulances came
and went. The shredded building was surrounded by broken trees and
overturned cars.
Emergency officials told local television that at least one teacher
was among those killed at the school. CNN quoted an eyewitness as
saying he carried the bodies of two young girls out of the building.
"Enterprise has suffered major and widespread damage," Riley said.
President Bush, who earlier toured New Orleans and the Gulf Coast to
assess the recovery from Hurricane Katrina, called the Alabama and
Missouri governors to extend condolences and offer aid, the White
House said.
Alabama state officials sent search and rescue teams, ambulances,
generators and emergency lights to Enterprise to aid the search for
survivors. Phone service and electricity were out through much of the
area.
Doctors treated more than 50 people for lacerations, broken bones and
other injuries, hospital CEO Jeff Brannon said. Most of them were hurt
at the school.
Hospital workers had rushed to move patients away from the windows as
sirens screamed out a warning moments before a dark funnel cloud
roared past. Hospital windows burst and cars were pummeled in the
hospital parking lot, Brannon said.
In the town of Caulfield in south-central Missouri, a tornado killed a
girl in a mobile home and damaged six other homes and two gasoline
stations, officials said.
Parts of several Midwestern states and regions as far south as the
Gulf Coast to the Florida Panhandle had been under tornado watches or
warnings most of the day.
In Chicago, more than 400 flights were canceled at O'Hare
International Airport as gusty storms and fog rolled in.
"To the best of our knowledge there was at least one significant
tornado that went through the city of Enterprise but we won't know if
there was more than one before tomorrow when we send a team to conduct
a storm survey of the affected area," said Tom Bradshaw, a
meteorologist in Fort Worth, Texas, with the National Weather Service
headquarters for the southern region.
"Several counties in Alabama and also Georgia are currently under
tornado warnings," he said.
Thursday's storms came just a month after a tornado killed about 20
people in central Florida.
