This thread has gone out of whack. Pundits on the right side of the
aisle are using the WWII comparison to justify the post war
reconstruction efforts. When pundits on the left complain the Bush has
gotten into a "quagmire" with "no plan to get out" the current talking
points on the rigth to counter those comments are increasing more to
mention that it took several years for us to rebuild Germany and Japan
after WWII, heck we even have military bases in both countries. Still.
But their arguement falls flat on its face. There are very few, if
any, parallels between WWII and Gulf War II. Except for the II.
Saddam did not invade half the countries in his part of the world. (He
did invade Kuwait once, but a UN coaliation kicked him out.) We
invaded him, without the general support of the world community.
Saddam was no real immediate threat to the US or anyone else in the
world m even those countries that bordered him.
We are not part of a world community in the rebuilding effort. We
(read: current and future US taxpayers) are footing the lion's share
of the bill.
(A few are ponying up now, but I'll take bets on how much finaly comes
in from other countries.)
The right's comparison of the rebuilding efforts then and now is
nothing more than a smokescreen.

Saddam was the nearest thing to Hitler during his reign. The mass
murder of stateless Kurds by chemical WMDs proves the point beyond
doubt.
