US high school student shoots dead five before graduation

A high school student is thought to have gone on a shooting rampage
hours before his graduation ceremony, killing three members of his own
family and two other people before turning the gun on himself.
Authorities said a preliminary investigation indicated that Scott
Moody, 18, had shot dead his mother and two grandparents, as well as a
high school friend and a 14-year-old girl, at two neighbouring
farmhouses near Bellefontaine, Ohio.
His sister, Stacy, 15, was wounded but survived, raising the alarm by
calling a friend on her mobile phone. She is in hospital in a critical
condition.
Moody and one of his victims, Megan Karus, 19, were due to graduate
from Riverside high school on Sunday.
Sheriff Michael Henry said investigators had found several guns at the
scene, including a rifle inside the farmhouse where the bodies of the
two students, as well as Moody's mother, Sheri Shafer, 37, and Paige
Harshbarger, 14, a friend of his sister, were found.
The bodies of Moody's grandparents, Gary Shafer, 67, and Sharyl Shafer,
66 - who last week placed an advertisement in the local Bellefontaine
Examiner newspaper wishing him "Good luck in your future!" - were
discovered in a farmhouse a quarter of a mile away.
The sheriff said deputies had records of 10 "nuisance-type" call-outs
that police made at the farmhouse where the first four bodies were
found, but none involving complaints of violence.
The shootings have devastated the small rural community. People drifted
in and out of the sheriff's office on Sunday afternoon, hugging and
crying.
"I've been doing this for 35 years and I've never seen anything like
this," said Lieutenant Chuck Stout of the Logan County sheriff's
department. "Dealing with a small community like this, everyone knows
everyone," he told Associated Press.

It will cease when parents and educators quit leaning on kids to
constantly PRODUCE and SUCCEED and MAKE BIG MONEY while all the while
FITTING IN and CONFORMING and buying into that horrendous lie called
SCHOOL SPIRIT. Not every student fits into that mold. As we've seen
with the guy in Ohio and numerous others, some just can't take that
pressure when they don't even know why they're being subjected to it.
You need some private time to ponder and contemplate and figure things
out. I would bet big money this kid's parents were constantly in his
face, photographing him in the cap and gown, phoning the relatives and
making sure the local newspaper wrote it up and all that nonsense.
As a parent now, I would never in a million years advocate violence of
any sort, especially where innocent people are involved. But as a
former "weird kid", I can understand where this guy was coming from.
When I was his age I had similar thoughts. Even though I graduated from
high school, my public school education, such as it was, ended around
the 7th grade for reasons too complicated to list here. I spent as much
time as possible in the library or other places away from the maddening
crowds. I was listed as absent on days when I was very much in the
building. It was a bad experience any way you look at it and I just
wished they could have handed me the damn diploma and been done with it.
All it meant to me was that I had occupied a seat in the building for
the legal minimum of days. The guidance counselors steered me away from
taking the S.A.T's, suggesting I didn't really need to bother with them.
At the time I was relieved to be exempted from what I figured to yet
another big hassle with no payoff. If I had known then what I know now,
I would have raised all kinds of hell about it. Thank goodness my kids
seem to have their heads on straight and are doing well academically
with a minimum of prodding.
As long as high schools retain their cliquish social structures and the
parents keep up this relentless pressure, you're going to have incidents
like this.

Perhaps making arms a little harder to come by might help, don't see
much in any place where arms are not available.
