Health officials naively think it's not the spiders. But we know
differently. The creepy crawlies are doing this to people. They sneak up on
us while we're sleeping and bite us, injecting a bacteria. Soon after, a
horrid skin disease is noticed.

Recent news coverage has caused a wave of concern about MRSA, how it is
spread and how you can keep from getting it.
Until recently MRSA or methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus was found
mainly in healthcare setting such as hospitals, however MRSA is now being
found in non-healthcare setting like pools and locker-rooms. As it turns out
the bacterium that causes MRSA, is found on the skin and in the nose of one
third of the population. These carriers are not sick but can easily spread
the germs to others. This community-associated form of MRSA causes a skin
infection that many people attribute to spider bites, even though less than
two percent of spider bites cause a severe reaction and the fact that most
folks could not recall seeing a spider bite them. The staph bacteria, from a
carrier or an uncovered infected wound, is left on benches, towels, athletic
equipment and other shared items then enters a cut or scratch and begins to
overgrow causing an abscess that usually requires treatment. Properly
cleaning equipment and laundering towels, as well as washing your hands,
covering sores and not sharing personal items will reduce the spread of
these germs. See a doctor if you develop a skin infection or abscess,
untreated MRSA can be fatal.

They say there are potentially dozens of spiders within 10 feet of us at
all times, day and night, and I don't see them very often. Perhaps you
have those rare leaping spiders which grow to the size of small dogs..
they're on your throat before you even see them. I recently hosted an
extended family of field mice in my condominium.. one of these was so
energetic he would leap from the floor to my counter, a distance of
3 feet, and this little tyke only stood 2 inches off the ground.. it
was truely an animal feat. Nonetheless, the human brain conquered any
amount of animal dynanism and I no longer have a mouse problem. I
imagine it gets cold outside in the winter for those little fellers.
