Your e-mails: Are we fighting World War III?
POSTED: 5:38 p.m. EDT, September 1, 2006
(CNN) -- On Thursday, President Bush said the fight against terrorism
as the ideological struggle of the 21 and compared it to the 20th
century's fight against fascism, Nazism, and communism.
We asked CNN.com readers to send in their thoughts on whether the U.S.
is engaged in World War III. Here is a selection of responses, some of
which have been edited:
I think that President Bush is trying to use scare tactics for
political reasons. There is no comparison between the Iraq war and
World War II or the Cold War. The bottom line is we invaded a country
which was no threat to us and created a civil war. So many of our brave
soldiers have died there and it has wasted so much money that could
have been used to help people in our country.
Susan Hildes, Somerset New Jersey
The definition of a world war is battles of one group against another
on several continents simultaneously. Since the Western powers and
their allies are fighting terrorism in Asia, Europe, North America, and
Africa to a smaller extent, then it would seem that, yes, we are
fighting a world war, and by some counts this is No. 3.
Rick Cardenas, Riverton, Wyoming
It is time to take the Bush's petty political jargon out of the
equation, get back with all our NATO friends, especially the ones with
money, and start a reconstruction program that the whole world can
participate in for the betterment of Iraq.
John Freeman, Prescott, Arizona
No, we're not in WW III, yet, but Duyba's just the man to take us there
if he keep's up his belligerent, arrogant attitude with the rest of the
world. We have an ignorant, dangerous man running this country and we
need to do everything in our power to neutralize him. I suggest
impeachment, ASAP.
Cindy Dolen, Houston, Texas
Yes, this is the start of World War III. There is a confluence of
tensions, such as Israel and it's Arab neighbors and Iran and the U.S.
The Iraq War is serving as a powerful force of destabilization that
will undo the whole lot. Also, this is really about oil, which is in
tight supply. The whole industrialized world has a stake in the
outcome.
Luke Wyman, Brooklyn, New York
Anyone who says this is World War III has lost their capacity for
rational thought. As the name implies, World Wars engulf much of the
world. Here we have a civil war in Iraq, skirmishes in Afghanistan,
skirmishes in Lebanon, and occasional acts of terrorism in a few other
parts of the world. Nothing close to a world war.
Ken Chambers, Austin, Texas
If we don't look back on History then this country is History. Bush
wants the fight over there and so do I.
***** Snodgrass, Jacksonville, Florida
Of, course we are in World War III. The current administration's elite
leadership has been planning this war for over twenty years. They are
the fascists who want to control the worlds oil supply and destroy the
nations of Islam.
Paul Du Jat, Tampa, Florida
The Bush administration has constructed a new enemy - terrorism - which
is not an enemy at all but a series of predictable actions taken by
those who have no other means of addressing wrongs committed against
them. Bush is using this as a pretext for global war and domination.
William Straub, Pasadena, California
Yes, we may be in World War III, but if we are, then it's worth the
bloodshed to get rid of evil.
Josh Libhater, U.S.
With violence spreading and increasing around the world, with the
defiant nature of belligerent governments continually drawing lines in
the sand, I don't see how a global conflict can be avoided. We are
heading to a "winner take all" worldwide showdown, which will either
alter the course of our future or obliterate everyone on the planet.
And "W" will be right on the front lines of the destruction asking if
we are with him or for him.
John Dennis, St Paul, Minnesota
