Yeah, I know racism and segregation are still abundant, Woods, but it was
even worse when I was growing up, much, much worse.
The changes have to do with punishment for prejudice, and the fear of
being punished, moved separated racial groups together in many areas of
America.
I don't pretend that the 60s civil rights movement created a situation
that isn't still evolving today, or one that will backtrack in certain
quarters. Yet, if it hadn't been for the movement, and the resultant
constitutionally-reinforcing law-making, America would be an even more
dangerous or at least difficult place to live.
I rail against blanket statements like 'it's a great country' because they
are blanket statements that don't consider all the hard details, the
realities of everyday life.
Nations aren't 'great' that live in pervasive deceit, distrust,
exploitation, fear, et al, nor are they 'great' when leaders escape
punishment for unnecessary warfare, or badly bungle a massive disaster
relief program.
The problem with 'blanket statements' is that they are most often used by
those who are either trying to manipulate us, or by those who are stupid
or ignorant of the realities we face.
When a contrasting example is given -- let's say, Cuba -- they expect that
difference shown will support their contention that we live in a 'great
country', for we are not under a socialistic tyranny.
One could keep this denial routine going almost indefinitely until our
society collapses, by always finding a nation worse off than we are. Hell,
ain't ya glad you don't live in Iraq? LOL! Count yo blessins', you
whiners! We're a great country!!!

I think it's more complex than whether 'you hate it or like it.' Anyone

major problems in it that they can't possibly like, and that adversely

affected?? If you don't like the suffering of human beings, the injustice,
the murdering, the exploitation, the fear, etc., then you show your
concern for that suffering by speaking against those features in our
country that cause so much distress. It is not that one likes or dislikes
a nation, but rather that human beings have serious problems that need to
be addressed. Since I'm living here, born here, and will likely die here,
my concern for those problems is focused on the national environment I
dwell in. I will not look the other way, sugar coat our problems, ignore
them, or obfuscate them by glowing promotions or cheerleading. It is my

Thank you for this, Krib. All I ever here is how much we are "hated"
and such. It's nice, every once in awhile to hear something positive.
The USA is the 'big boy' on the block so it will be the nation that
others look to in crisis
yet hate even when they flex their muscle, it's the cost of being a
superpower I think. Every
other nation that was one in the past appears to have gone through the

It's in a bit of a no win situation simply because of the power it can
wield. Sure it has domestic

imagine how someone could *hate* me when they've never even met me.
*But* when I traveled abroad to England, Ireland, Amsterdam, and
France - I had not one single problem with anyone. Everyone was great
and very welcoming. I even made new friends.
