convinced that there were bombs planted all over the place and someone

was mighty surprised and can only guess winds aloft must have been doing
something to make it worth getting up there for a <2 hr flight. Most airline
traffic sticks around 35k or so doesn't it?

On your particular flight, I'd concur that they must have had a jetstream on
the nose
upsetting the applecart as it's a little unusual to go that high on a short
haul.
The Boeing 747SP commonly operated above FL410 on long hauls to get the best
fuel
efficiency and some newer widebodies can go nearly as high, but for the most
part
~FL330-FL390 is cruise altitude. Jetstream winds can be well over 100 knots
so
pilots will sometimes request a 'block' level (a 'box' between, say, F330
and F370)
so that they can chase favourable winds up or down. Aircraft weight is a
factor,
particularly on a longer flight, since a full fuel load restricts the
ceiling, so as fuel burns
off, pilots will ask for higher levels, depending on the winds. High
altitude wind
forecasts are supplied in grid format and an airline pilot will use a
special chart to plot his
aircraft performanc envelope (with the fuel and pax/baggage load for that
leg) against
the winds and use a precomputed flight plan to pick the best level for each
leg and
supply the time intervals. It's more computerised now, but the principle is
the same.
Captains usually get a 'fuel bonus' for saving fuel so chasing winds to do
so is literally
money in the bank for them.
